Dad of 3 Fights Biggest Killer!
By Tamara McAllen
In August 2023, my Husband and Daddy to our three young boys, Graeme McAllen of Horley, got struck with the news we never thought we would hear. “You have grade four brain cancer known as Glioblastoma Multiforme, widely known as ‘The Terminator’’ in the medical world”.
Just 10 days before Graeme’s 41st birthday, out of the blue, he experienced a vocal seizure where he lost speech for a couple of minutes leading to numerous tests and the confirmation of his diagnosis.
Graeme was placed on palliative radiotherapy and chemotherapy. We were told an operation carried a high-risk of being left with life-changing injuries and he was given just 12 months to live.
After seeking a second opinion, Graeme underwent an awake craniotomy in January and 90% of his tumour was debulked. He has been enrolled on a clinical trial where he wears a medical device called Optune on his head for 20 hours a day which uses alternating electrical fields to cause cell death and prevent growth.
However, sadly, we know the cancer is incredibly aggressive and can grow back rapidly at any time. Therefore, in a bid to buy Graeme more time with our beautiful children, we are crowdfunding to help us source alternative treatments not yet available on the NHS. Just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to brain tumours since records began in 2002.
Graeme has completed a couple of cycles of immunotherapy treatment in Germany but with the total cost being over £100,000, we are doing everything we can to raise the funds for him to continue this treatment.
In the UK, 16,000 people each year are diagnosed with a brain tumour and they kill more men under 70 than prostate cancer.
We are determined that Graeme fights these statistics and be well enough to make memories with our beautiful family.
