In Haywards Heath
Earlier this year, Mid Sussex District Council (MSDC) held a creative and informative free community clothes swapping and textiles event at St Richards Church Hall in Haywards Heath. The event, open to all Mid Sussex residents was part of the MSDC’s West Sussex Waste Partnership’s tackling unwanted textiles campaign.
Event visitors were able to bring up to 10 items of good-quality unwanted clothing or accessories each and exchange them for new items. There were 598 donations made in total, which equates to 175.85kg of textiles potentially saved from general waste bins.
West Sussex waste prevention advisors organised workshops and demonstrations on the day to share ideas on how textiles can be reused or upcycled. Sussex Crafts and MSDC also ran fun-filled craft activities at the event for children, such as making sock puppets from unwanted, old odd socks.
Councillor Gary Marsh, cabinet member for service delivery, said: “Last year people in Mid Sussex threw nearly 405 tonnes of textiles in with the general rubbish. Swapping clothes with others is a great way to freshen up your wardrobe, protect the environment, save money and have a lot of fun.”
