Did you over do it at Christmas? Did you food shop until you dropped? If so, how much did you and your family eat? West Sussex County Council is encouraging residents to fight against food waste as part of the West Sussex Climate Pledge, which can save the planet, and can help save you money.
Around 40% of rubbish collected from households in West Sussex is food waste, often avoidable with food in the bin as it has not been used in time or because too much has been prepared, when it is binned without being used it means the production and packaging processes have been wasted.
Top tips to help you fight against food waste:
• Shop smart and thinking before you buy too much unnecessary food items.
• Make sure your fridge and freezer are set to the correct temperature to keep your food fresher.
• Love your leftovers and find creative ways to use leftovers means you throw away less.
• Compost vegetable peelings, coffee grounds and eggshells can all be composted.
