Hooked on Crochet

Crochet

The traditional and gentle art of crochet is finding new expression in Horsham’s free Wednesday morning Unity Cafés.

Once regularly taught in schools and part of the achievements of every young lady, the art of crochet has declined in popularity in recent decades. Yet those who continue to practice it find it a wonderfully calming and satisfying companion to quietness and relaxation and a productive and welcomed activity in social groups.

It is in just such a group that crochet is finding new expression in Horsham. The Wednesday morning Unity Cafés in Horsham’s Unitarian Community Hall – originally set up to offer “winter warmer” welcome, snacks and conversation to visitors – have proven popular throughout the year and have given rise to the development of a new group of creative crochet practitioners.

The variety of possible crochet products is wider than many realise. In addition to the decoration of existing objects items can include hats, bags, jumpers, shawls, table mats, scarves, decorative flowers and medallions, tea cosies and cushion covers. Particularly traditional, and still very popular as practical gifts, are cot or pram blankets, made and presented to parents to welcome the arrival of a
new baby.

The range of mental and physical benefits which crochet offers makes it unsurprising that a group should spontaneously appear in a relaxed social
setting such as Horsham’s Unity Cafés. Crochet offers a form of mindfulness that reduces stress, promotes relaxation, and calms the mind. As a creative outlet, it enables its practitioners to express their imagination and produce unique and personalised items. As a low-impact hobby it is generally done sitting down, making it ideal for those with limited mobility.

Anyone wishing to revive their interest in crochet – or to investigate what it could offer them – is welcome to drop into a Unity Café on any Wednesday morning between 10:30am and 12:30pm. The Community Hall is attached to Horsham’s Unitarian Church (directly opposite the town’s bus stop). Entry and morning coffee/ tea and snacks are entirely free, and, despite the church connection of the venue, there are no religious elements involved in visiting and attending the cafés.

Perhaps you may become part of a new generation “hooked on crochet”. Horsham Unitarian Church (Community Hall), Worthing Rd, Horsham RH12 1SL
