Home Maintenance S.O.S!

Your friendly local home maintenance expert and RH Uncovered columnist Rob Becvar, is here to help solve those lingering questions and D.I.Y dilemmas!

Rob of RBPM Direct is back answering more queries from RH Uncovered readers keen to use his years of experience to guide them on the path to a well-maintained home.

So Rob, what have we got in the inbox this month?

“Does a gap in my shower tray silicone need to be fixed urgently”

Mrs K, Burgess Hill

Yes! Any water-related repair is urgent as water can cause a lot of damage getting through gaps like this. Luckily, repairing the silicone in your shower tray is much less costly than fixing potential water damage if left unattended.

Pick up a tube of silicone sealant from your local hardware shop. It’s cheap and easy to apply to the gap yourself. Just make sure you leave it at least 6 hours to dry (although 24 hours is ideal!).

“Our lounge door handle doesn’t open the door, and we sometimes get locked in!”

Robert, Haywards Heath

It sounds like the springs in your door latch are broken! You need to replace the latch.

Remove the handle on one side, take out the spindle, unscrew, and remove the latch. You can buy replacements at any good hardware/DIY shop, just ensure you get the correct size.

“A plumber told me I needed a new toilet because mine runs water into the bowl constantly. Does that sound right?”

Tanya, Cuckfield

It’s unlikely you need a whole new toilet. Modern toilets have an internal overflow, so running water into the bowl indicates the cistern’s water levels are too high. This can be fixed by adjusting the toilet syphon in the cistern or replacing it. Neither requires a new toilet!

Fill out our booking form on our website and send photos. We can assess and provide an estimate for the repair. You were right to question their advice!”

ROB'S TOP TIP

“We’ve been seeing a lot more rain recently than in previous summers and had a lot of callouts to deal with overflowing and damaged gutters. When was the last time you had your gutters looked at? It’s worth checking them now before the seasons change and we get more wet and windy weather in Autumn!”

Next month in RH Uncovered, Rob will share more invaluable tips and answer your pressing questions about home maintenance and repairs in our new monthly feature. Got a suggestion? Email askrob@rhuncovered.co.uk
