Saddle up for Second Donkey Derby
As last year’s Horley Lions Donkey Derby was such a success – the organisation which serves Horley, Reigate, Redhill and surrounding villages, is planning their second fun donkey racing event, to take place on Sunday 13th September – along with their anticipated charity Dog Show!
The second event of its kind, hopes to raise up to £4,000 for Surrey Young Carers, which supports young
local carers who are looking after a loved one – an inspirational charity, which has understandably, touched the hearts of our Lions members:
“Until recently we did not know that there were so many young people out there supporting their parents or siblings,” Lion Peter Moxley told us. “These youngsters really are the unsung heroes as because of their family circumstances they have a very restricted social life and not only that, because of the strain on their time, their studies can be affected. These youngsters deserve a break and hopefully we will raise a few pennies for their cause.”
Money will be raised through stalls, BBQs and of course – those all-important donkey races!
“There will be eight races, if you can call them that, as most donkeys prefer to walk but you never know!” Peter laughs.
“There will be a tote for the spectators to have a flutter but the stakes are limited as we really want this to be a fun event and it is not geared towards the ardent gambler, as you never know what a donkey will do!”
The Donkey Derby, taking place on the Brighton Road, Recreation Ground, Horley, from 11:30am, will also feature the family favourite fundraising dog show (with judging taking place from 12:30pm), where proceeds will be donated to Canine Partners.
