Wealden District Council Declares Climate Emergency
Wealden District Council has declared a climate emergency and has announced that it plans to embark on a series of wide-ranging actions where it can make a difference to the planet.
As part of the council’s climate action plan, it aims to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by the council and across the district by 2050 – and pursue efforts for an earlier date still.
Cllr Roy Galley, cabinet member with responsibility for climate change, says: “The picture has changed, the situation has become more urgent. That is why we must take action now.”
An all–party cabinet advisory group chaired by Cllr Galley is working on devising a costed plan to enable the council to make its first steps towards achieving its net-zero carbon dioxide goal.
Speaking about Wealden District Council’s climate action plan, Cllr Galley, said: “We need to be ambitious, we need a vision, but it must be based on reality and properly planned.”
